Follow these steps to know how to become a firefighter in New York City:
1- Call the office number of recruiting in New York Fire Department (FDNY) 718-999-2169 and ask for employment application. Or you can fill the employment application from their official website.
Firefighter requirements:
1- You must be at least 18 years old
2- You must have high school diploma or what equals it
3-You must have a valid driving license
You will have to sign up for the FDNY civil service examination because this will be required during the selection of the firefighters.
2- After that you will take a written exam, and you will take this exam every 3 or 4 years. In the written exams of New York fire department, the applicant will be tested for:
- comprehension passages
- How to solve problems ( Related to firefighting )
- How to perform firefighter tasks and operations
You don't have to get some knowledge from a fire department for the exams because the FDNY will provide you free tutorials to prepare you.
Here are some information for the written exams of the firefighters
3- Physical examination.
These physical examinations are based of the firefighter equipment and the physical abilities, and it will test the following:
- Physical ability
- Flexibility
- Agility
You will wear a pack that weighs 50 pounds because this will be gear during the firefighting. The pack will include breathing apparatus.
You will have to carry 25 pounds because this will be simulating the hose pack when you climb the stairs.
The applicant will carry a heavy hammer that weighs 10 pounds when you break into a building.
After you perform well in both the physical and the written exams you will go to the next step
4- In this step you the New York fire department will test you medical and psychological conditions after you succeed in both the physical and the written exams for firefighters. After this, you will go through the background examination.
5- Finally you will go through the firefighter training only if you have been selected from the civil service list and you get hired. Then firefighters of New York will take special firefighting courses in the fire academy and in-house trainings. You will spend several months to complete the two tests
